How to Stop My
Dog Digging
Most dogs, no matter how well trained they are, are so
full of energy that they tend to do stuff that vexes and
ultimately frustrates you. It gets even more of a problem
especially when they start to dig up your lawn and leave ugly gaping holes.
If you want to stop dog from digging, then this article is
for you. But of course, you’ll need to know the basics
first, so read on.
Causes
There are many reasons why dogs tend to dig holes in your
backyard. The main reason happens to be because of instinct.
Thousands of years of evolution have helped ingrained into
their genetic makeup the fact that hiding food in the ground is
one way they can assure themselves that their goods are
protected (or at least hidden from other dogs eager to steal
them). The other side of this natural instinct of theirs is
that they know that other dogs hide goods in the ground too, so
it’s like a treasure hunting game to them. Apart from this, its
fun for them and they usually do this because they’re bored.
This last one happens to be the most common causes of why dogs
dig.

Prevention
Here are some ways you can do so you can stop dog from
digging.
• Take the dog out for a walk. Dog boredom is sometimes
easily cured when you do this. Not only is it fun for them,
it’s also one of the best ways you can do so as to ensure that
they’ve contented themselves and won’t try to dig up your lawn
anytime soon.
• Play with your dog regularly. Training him or her to fetch
some balls or catch Frisbees is a great way to release all that
energy. This also insures you that your dog will be exhausted
enough and be discouraged from digging.
• Fence the dog in his or her own area, particularly a
cemented one so they can’t get out or dig holes. Make sure they
have access to water so they don’t get thirsty. Make sure you
provide the area a shade or just enough protection from all
kinds of weather. Place some toys in there for their amusement
such as dry bones or other stuff. This tip happens to be the
most effective way to stop dog from digging.
• Better yet, fence the dog out of certain areas such as
your garden so they can be free to roam wherever they like and
minimize boredom.
• Most dogs love to cool down especially when it’s hot, and
digging is their way of finding moisture or just a way out of
the heat. Make a wading pool of some sort so they can have an
alternative.
• Spray your dog with water every time they start to dig.
Install sprinklers on your lawn so they’ll get discouraged. Buy
automatic sprinklers if you can afford them. You also have the
option of just buying a water pistol.
Try to remember that pain is never a good way to instill
good behavior in your dog. Avoid punishing your pet when you
want to stop dog from digging because it’ll only be a waste of
your time, since they’ll only get the idea that they can’t dig
while you’re around. When you leave, they’ll just continue with
their digging because you’re not looking anymore. Reread this
article over again so you can insure yourself that you have a
well behaved dog.
