Dog Training Techniques

There are a lot of people who get frustrated with teaching their dogs simple commands such as Sit or Stop. If you’re one of many people who are just totally confused on the proper way to train your dog into an obedient pet, then this article is for you.

Preparation Secrets to Dog Training

For starters, what you need to do is to simply take away any distractions that might disturb you and your dog during the training process. Keep your pet away from other animals or other people that might distract him/her. Take your dog out for a walk for some potty time or at least make sure they’re not full in the stomach. Bring some treats so you can reward them whenever they obey.

Positive Reinforcement Basics

Most experts agree that the most efficient way of training your dog is by way of positive reinforcement. Basically, it’s all about ignoring the kind of behavior that you don’t want to see your dog do, and rewarding the things that you do want to see. This means no pain as punishment and just simply rewards for good behavior. This works totally well for you and your dog simply because it’s their basic instinct to learn that they benefit more from figuring out what you like instead of what you don’t like. Therefore, they try to repeat what you like every time.

Consistency

A lot of people use markers for pointing out to dogs that they’ve done something good. A simple Yes word does the trick most of the time. You have to keep in mind that you need to say this with a happy and pleased voice. Saying this in almost exactly the same way all the time creates a sense of recognition for the dog and figures out that what he or she did was pleasing to you and will remember to repeat it next time you want something. Just remember to always be consistent with your commands. Along with the right tone of voice, your dog will understand what you’re trying to communicate.

Rewards

Rewards don’t have to be the same all the time though. Sporadic treats instead of predictable ones tend to bore a lot of dogs so it’s best that you keep them on their toes by making them excited about which kind of treat they’ll receive. Also, try to make the training a bit more fun for you and your dog. Frisbees or just playing catch with a ball goes a long way.
