Dog Separation
Anxiety
Dogs are highly social creatures that need interaction from
their owners on a daily basis. Their instincts as pack animals
can hardly be suppressed even though we’ve been
domesticating them for thousands of years. If they don’t
get enough socialization, dog separation anxiety can get
to be a bit of a headache for any dog owner.
The Basics
If you want to treat your dog’s problem of
separation anxiety, then you need to go back to the basics. One
of the best ways to do this is to give your dog positive
reinforcement. Never inflict pain as punishment for the dog.
Instead, only reward them if they do something good. Never give
them attention if they become afraid. If they did something bad
(like if they peed on the floor or dug up your lawn), ignore
your dog and deprive him by not showing him affection. As a
further tip on the basics, don’t give the dog too much
attention when you leave. Don’t make it a big deal when you
come home, either.

Some Independence
Dog separation anxiety is simply just
another term for loneliness in dogs. It’s ok to teach your dog
some independence as long as it’s within the boundaries of the
rules you’ve set for him. Train him to keep away from you by
making use of the Stay command and then leaving him after
awhile. Give him a treat whenever he obeys. Let him get used to
you by being unpredictable and leaving all of a sudden. Don’t
rattle any keys as this usually gives him a sign that you’re
getting ready to depart. Gradually acclimate your dog to some
soothing music or just turn on the TV. Let him know it’s ok and
that the TV (or music) is a sort of companion for him. Make
sure you’ve trained the dog on paper training so he’ll know
where to pee or poop.
Ask Somebody
Dog separation anxiety can go both ways, which means it can
reflect back to you. If you can’t bear the thought of leaving
your dog alone, especially if you know you’re going to be gone
for a long period of time, ask somebody to take care of your
dog for you. Make sure your dog knows the person and can be
trusted. If you don’t know anybody you can trust, you can use
professionals or take your pet to a doggy daycare center. You
can leave him on boarding facilities or even a veterinary
clinic. Just make sure that the dog doesn’t panic and that he
knows how to socialize with other people and animals.
Medical Condition
If you’ve gone through all the stuff mentioned above and you
still can’t cure your dog of separation anxiety, then you can
bet that it’s a medical condition. Take him to a vet and ask if
he needs special medications. Note however, that not all
medications are successful especially with some types of
breeds, so it’s best that you get an animal behaviorist and a
vet’s opinion at the same time.
Dog separation anxiety is a fairly easy problem to solve. As
long as owners track the behavior, it can be solved quite
quickly. As a parting tip: if you have a large family, make
sure that they’re consistent along with you (concerning the
methods that are mentioned above) in order for the treatment to
become a success.
