Dog Behavior Training

Continued from page 1: Dog Behavior Problems - An Overview

Here are some more of the most common dog behavior problems listed along with some easy dog behavior training solutions.Dog Behavior Problems

Separation Anxiety. Dog separation anxiety is quite probably the most puzzling of all. When your dog becomes anxious whenever you’re starting to leave, or they like to follow and touch you every time, you can be sure that your dog has this problem. It’s sometimes a little hard to solve since this requires you to go back to the basics of dog behavior training. Don’t inflict pain. Instead, use positive reinforcement by rewarding your dog for obedience, and ignoring them for bad behavior.

Excessive Eliminating. Too much pooping and peeing is one of those common dog problems that can get a little frustrating. The main reason for this is sometimes fear and anxiety, but sometimes it’s all about a lack of proper training. Make sure you train them in proper housebreaking through one of the various methods (e.g. paper training).

Jumping or Lunging. Dogs sometimes like to jump on their owners because it’s either fun for them to do or they’re just simply bored. Another reason for this is so that they can exert dominance, although this is somewhat of an occasional occurrence. The best solution for this is by ignoring them and avoiding eye contact.

Aggression. The most dangerous of all dog behavior problems is simply this one. When they show their teeth and snarl at you, you can be sure that they’ve got this problem. It is best that you stay away from your dog for the time being and consult a professional or a veterinarian in case your pet has an illness of some kind. Although lunging and nipping are not considered as aggression in some states, they can still be very dangerous, so it’s best to consult a dog behaviorist first before doing anything else.

Chasing. Your dog is a natural predator. When they succumb to their natural instinct of chasing moving things, it can get very dangerous for your dog. Imagine if they chased a ball down the street without your consent and he suddenly freezes as a car bears down on him. You can prevent this by leash training your dog. You could also make sure that they absolutely obey your Stay command or have a dog whistle at hand just in case things start go wrong. Go back to the basics of dog behavior training if you have to.

Begging. For some people, dog begging is not necessarily a problem. But for others, it is (especially during dinner times). It becomes a problem when they’ve been spoiled so much that they’re used to you giving them attention when they beg and give you those puppy dog eyes. You don’t want them getting frustrated and excited by jumping on the table because they want to be rewarded with food. If you want to cure this one, make sure to use the Stay command effectively or at least confine him to another room. As with the problem of dog chasing, you can opt to go back to basic dog training.

Aside from the fact that you have to train your dog by going through all the necessary obedience exercises, the relationship between you and your dog must be one that is rooted in friendship and never in a tyrannical and abusive manner. Always remind yourself that your dog is your best friend and you must therefore treat him that way, even though you have to guide him on how to behave properly. Dog behavior problems cannot be solved with cruel punishment, but rather with understanding and love.
